Crew Member Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The group of women also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
