White House Announces Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services used by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from implementing any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report argued that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
